The social and educational influences I received as a student at Motlow State continue to have a significant impact on my life. I met and developed relationships with a large number of people, including my business partner, and many of those relationships have continued since I graduated from Motlow.
I am from a small town, Pulaski, but I possess big town dreams and aspirations. I am an entrepreneur, a small businessman, developing my own clothing line called Authentic Individuals. Being from Pulaski, the small-town feel of the Motlow Smyrna Campus environment fit me well. Where I come from, people are friendly and supportive, and I found Motlow students and instructors to be of the same mindset. Being at Motlow was like a ‘taste of home.’
As students at Motlow, my business partner and I were able to learn the basics of business and what it would take to be successful entrepreneurs. We started selling our clothing designs to friends on campus and enjoyed a lot of success, and our instructors encouraged us to pursue our dreams.
I graduated from Motlow in 2017 with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Accounting, then went on to earn my Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from Middle Tennessee State University. I continue to live and work in Murfreesboro. My Completion Coach at Motlow, Sydney McPhee, was a valuable asset to me, providing one-on-one consultation and support as I negotiated the challenges of succeeding in college. Sydney remains a good friend.
Thanks to the Tennessee Promise, I was able to graduate from Motlow with zero debt. The most significant reason I was able to begin and remain in college was the lack of financial stress because of the Promise. While I attended the Smyrna campus, I was able to establish myself in Rutherford County, and I will continue to build my business there.
Because of the tremendous support I received from faculty and staff at Motlow, I was able to determine that marketing, rather than accounting, was my true passion. Our clothing line continues to progress, including the hard launch of our newest designs soon. We are building a website that will be supporting the hard launch.
I am very thankful for my time at Motlow, and without question, the College helped me find the right path to my future. Motlow is a great stepping stone to the business world or a four-year university.
My educational as well as social experiences at Motlow continue to play a major role in my life as I know it today. I am from a small town, Pulaski, TN., however, I have “large town” aspirations, as I am developing my own business featuring a clothing line, Authentic Individuals. I graduated from Motlow in 2017 with an A.A.S. degree in accounting and went on to obtain my bachelor’s degree in marketing from Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro where I currently live and work. While a student at Motlow I met and developed lasting relationships with several individuals, including my current business partner. My Completion Coach at that time, Sydney McPhee, was very helpful, through one-on-one consultation and support as I negotiated the challenges of going to college. Sydney remains my good friend to this day.
Being from a small town, the Motlow environment meant a lot to me, as I found it to be a “taste of home” since students and instructors were very friendly and supportive.
Motlow was a “life hack” with me being part of the first group of Tennessee Promise graduates. Thanks to the Promise I was able to graduate from Motlow with zero debt! The lack of financial stress was a big part of why I was able to stay enrolled in college. Also, going to class on the Smyrna campus allowed me to become established in Rutherford County where I am now building my business.
At Motlow my business partner and I learned the basics to pretty much any entrepreneurial endeavor we can think of. While at Motlow we started selling our clothes to our classmates and friends on campus and had much success early on, along with a lot of support and encouragement from our Motlow instructors. It is from this experience that I realized my passion was for marketing and sales instead of accounting and numbers.
We are conducting a hard launch of our clothing line featuring female hoodies and joggers and a male jacket very soon. Our philosophy is quality is much more important than quantity. At the time of our launch we will also be going public with our website, Authentic-Individuals.myshopify.com.
I believe my future is very bright and am very thankful for my Motlow experience and the opportunities it has provided me. I believe Motlow was a great steppingstone into the business and real-life world. I would do it all over again!
