As I reflect on my college experience, I realize that attending Motlow in 1983 was just what I needed, right when I needed it.
I graduated from Manchester High School, now Coffee County High School, and was eager to begin college. Being the first in my immediate family to go to college, I fancied the idea of leaving home to attend the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. However, I was uncertain if I was ready for such a big move. Going to college was a big step, and although my family was supportive, I realized it would be a financial hardship if I attended a four-year college right out of high school.
Attending Motlow seemed like a logical choice, stay, and live at home and earn credits toward a four-year degree. At that time and place in my life, I was not ready to be far from home, and I found it to be a smooth transition into college life. The environment was not only comfortable but supportive, very much family-like. I developed fond memories and close relationships with my instructors such as Weldon Payne in literature, Bob Crosslin in math and Debbie Zimmerman in communications. One of my favorite memories is participating in the Children’s Drama production with Professor Zimmerman. The productions were a great learning experience as students participated in all aspects of theatre, not to mention a great deal of fun being able to perform for area grade-school students.
After two years at Motlow, I went on to Knoxville to graduate from UT with a bachelor’s in communications. I have enjoyed a career in print and broadcast journalism, corporate communications, marketing, and executive leadership. The preparation and education I received at Motlow set me up for success in furthering my education and was comparable to the opportunities I experienced in Knoxville, a fact that further confirms that my decision to attend Motlow was the best choice for me.
I had time and space to learn and grow while being close to home, and, along with the support of financial aid, it created the best environment for me. I received excellent instruction, very much on par with the education I received later in my academic journey.
Looking back, I am grateful for the path I took. Motlow was just what I needed, right when I needed it!
